I see many people, unfortunately, using Wodent Wheels.
So I thought I would add a somewhat tutorial on how to modify it to make it safe. Because, no, they are NOT safe. Even with the tail guard they aren’t safe.

I just finished the video version of the wheel tutorial.
In my opinion, the video tutorial and the written tutorial complement each other so you should check out both.
Here’s the link to the video: https://youtu.be/O8DA3QFJFA8 <—Updated video
I will probably be working on a tutorial for a treadmill, so check back soon. 😉
If I took good enough videos of the process, I’ll be making it a video tutorial as well.
So I’ve been using the wheels with the acrylic sheet on the back for about 4 months.
I’ve also been using a wheel with 2 ceiling covers for about 2 months.
So far the wheels are in great shape. No falling apart or anything of the sort. 🙂
Also, I’m going to be making a couple of wheels with some “bounce” to them. 😉

October 5, 2015 Update:
Three months after the original post and the wheels are still in perfect condition.
So that’s about 7 months with the acrylic back.
And about 5 months with the two ceiling covers.
Oh, and I made one off-centered that’s been used for about 3 months now.
No issues with that one either. 🙂

It’s been about a year, more for some, since I’ve been using the wheel with the acrylic backing, the wheel with two ceiling covers and the off-centered wheel.
Since then I have made more wheels and a couple treadmills. Some wheels have been using the wall shield as backing.
I haven’t had a single issue with any of the wheels or treadmills.
No falling off, cracking, squeaking or anything.
My conclusion is that it’s perfectly safe to make your own wheel and treadmill if you follow my tutorials and recommendations.

Still no issues with the wheels.
A few weeks ago I posted a tutorial to make your own PVC cage.
Now I want to talk about the cages themselves.
These types of cages are easily customizable.
The cost of making a PVC cage varies greatly. It’ll depend on your location, the design you choose and the size you go with.
You can see comments and how I clean mine here here: PVC cage comments
I’ve seen people say things like it costs $10 or $20 to make your own wheel.
I don’t know how they are making them or if they are safe or not but, assuming you have to buy all of the materials, it’s most likely going to cost you more than $10 or $20 to make a safe wheel.
So I decided to do a cost breakdown of my wheel. (Prices may vary depending on where you live. These are the prices for my area.)
So, a few weeks ago, I posted a wheel tutorial but I noticed a couple of days ago that a lid of one of the wheels was cracking a little around the bolt.
Honestly, I’m just posting stuff here so that it seems that I’m active and the blog appears when people search for a sugar glider wheel tutorial. lol
Anyway, intros weren’t working between Gaius and any of my others…sooo I got another one for him.
If you think this tutorial is not good, then feel free to contact me to improve it. (tsugielove@gmail.com)
There are people out there who want to make their own wheels and if you think the wheel made from this tutorial, even though it follows the Fast Track design, is unsafe and you’re all about safety, then act on it.
I am very open to a discussion. I do not believe I know it all (as evidenced by all the updates I have made and the comments I have added as the time has passed).
I made a video tutorial as well. However, it is not as comprehensive as the written version. I highly recommend you check out both. https://youtu.be/O8DA3QFJFA8
I also made a breakdown of the cost to make them here: DIY Wheel Cost Breakdown
I figured I’d post my sugar gliders. 🙂
I have five gliders. One female and four males.
